Patriotic Brownies

Here’s a super-simple desert for the 4th of July—Patriotic Brownies! Everyone loves brownies and these are even more yummy because they’re topped with frosting and fresh strawberries and blueberries! The brownies are from a mix with chocolate chips and chopped walnuts (or pecans) added in. Or, you can make your favorite homemade brownie recipe. Likewise, these are frosted with ready-made frosting, but you can use your favorite homemade vanilla or cream cheese frosting recipe instead!

Making the flag pattern on top with the blueberries and strawberries is super-easy and just takes minutes to do. If you’re wanting to make these brownies ahead of time, let them cool completely and frost them. Don’t arrange the berries on top until closer to serving time, and then refrigerate until ready to serve.

You can make these brownies in a 9×13″ pan or baking dish. Since I was taking pictures of these brownies for Mary & Martha, I baked the brownies in their Fresh Joy™ Rectangular Baking Dish, and it worked perfectly! The decorative wavy edges make such a nice presentation, whether you’re baking a dessert or a meal in this baking dish!

Patriotic Brownies by NancyC

Makes a 9×13″ pan

1 (18.4-ounce) box brownie mix, plus ingredients for the mix (eggs, water, oil)
3/4 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1 (16-ounce) container ready-made vanilla or cream cheese frosting
3/4 to 1 cup fresh blueberries
2 1/2 to 3 cups fresh strawberries, halved

Preheat oven to 350˚F. Grease or spray a 9×13″ pan; set aside.

Mix brownies according to package directions. After mixing, fold in the mini chocolate chips and chopped nuts, stirring until evenly incorporated in batter.

Bake at 350˚F for 24 to 26 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Let brownies cool completely in pan, then frost with the container of frosting. Then arrange berries over the frosted brownies in a flag pattern.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

NOTE: You can make a cake instead of brownies and decorate it the same way!
