This is a really tasty spread that makes a great party appetizer served with crackers. It’s also great spread on bagels for breakfast, brunch or a snack–I really like it on Everything bagels! It’s so easy to make, too…you can whip this up in no time! I originally clipped this recipe out of a magazine some time ago, but I found it over at Food.com, too. According to Food.com, this recipe makes 16 servings…or maybe a little less if you like to spread it on thick! 🙂
BACON-GREEN ONION CREAM CHEESE SPREAD (adapted from Food.com)
- 8 ounces softened cream cheese, regular or light
- 4 ounces cooked bacon, chopped (or you can substitute real bacon bits)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (2-3, depending on their size)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and blend well. Cover and chill in refrigerator until ready to use. This spread can be stored in your refrigerator for up to 2 days. Serve as a spread for bagels or crackers.
Over at Food.com, they refer to this spread as a “schmere.” According to Epicurious, the word is thought to have come from the Yiddish word shmirn (to smear or grease), and is used in the culinary world to describe a dab of cream cheese or mayonnaise that is spread on a bagel or roll. A new word we can add to our vocabulary! 🙂
