This is a really tasty spread that makes a great party appetizer served with crackers. It’s also great spread on bagels for breakfast, brunch or a snack—I really like it on Everything bagels! It’s so easy to make, too…you can whip this up in no time!
I originally clipped this recipe out of a magazine some time ago, but I found it over at Food.com, too. According to Food.com, this recipe makes 16 servings…or maybe a little less if you like to spread it on thick! 🙂

BACON-GREEN ONION CREAM CHEESE SPREAD by NancyC, adapted from Food.com
- 8 ounces softened cream cheese, regular or light
- 4 ounces cooked bacon, chopped (or you can substitute real bacon bits or pieces)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped green onion
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and blend well. Cover and chill in refrigerator until ready to use. This spread can be stored in your refrigerator for up to 2 days. Serve as a spread for bagels or crackers.

Over at Food.com, they refer to this spread as a “schmere.” According to Epicurious, the word is thought to have come from the Yiddish word shmirn (to smear or grease), and is used in the culinary world to describe a dab of cream cheese or mayonnaise that is spread on a bagel or roll. A new word we can add to our vocabulary! 🙂

One of my favorite combinations. It’s also good piped into cherry tomatoes and opened snow peas…

It was the first time I had made a bacon spread, too! It’s also yummy if you pop it in the microwave for about 10 sec. after spreading it on the bagel to warm it up a little.

Does this really call for 4 oz of COOKED bacon? Not 4 oz of uncooked? It seems like a lot. Or is there supposed to be a ton of bacon?

Yes, it is cooked bacon–just add less, though, if you don’t want that much in your spread!

Why is this only good for 2 days?

You could keep the spread longer than 2 days, but I think it tastes best within a few days of making it!

Made this today for the first time (reduced real bacon bits to 2-ounces) and served to company. We LOVED it! A new favorite that I’ll be making often for years to come…like our next company this weekend! Thanks Nancy.

Oh yes, I used whipped cream cheese, and it was perfect. Easy to mix and stays spreadable.
